Unit 5 APA Referencing Style

Referencing is a way to acknowledge the ideas, research, and work of others, which is crucial for academic writing. The practice of referencing:

  • Provides evidence for my arguments.
  • Gives credit to the original authors and sources.
  • Allows others to follow up on the sources I have used

Using Source Material for In-Text Citation:

  • Direct Voice: When quoting directly from a source, I need to include the author, year of publication, and page number (if applicable).
  • Indirect Voice: When paraphrasing or summarizing, I still need to credit the original author, but I don’t need to include the page number.
  • Quotation: For direct quotes, the citation must include the author's last name, year of publication, and page number (e.g., Smith, 2020, p. 15).
  • Images: If I use an image, I need to cite the source of the image in a similar way, mentioning the creator, year, and source.
  • Different Types of Sources: I also learned how to cite books, journals, newspapers, eBooks, and even media such as YouTube videos using APA in-text citations.

Basic rules for writing references
1. Include key details: Author, title, date, source.
2. Format consistently: Follow a specific citation style (e.g., APA, MLA)
3. Alphabetize entries: By the first author's last name.
4. Use proper punctuation: Style-specific rules apply.
5. Provide access information: Add DOI, URL, or publisher as needed.

Similarly, we also learnt how to prepare reference for non-periodical (books, edited books, translated books)

For periodicals (Journal, newsletter, newspaper)
